5TH GRADE: PASTEL TREES

5TH GRADE: COMPLEMENTARY COLOR CREATURES

This was one of the coolest projects! And they are so wonderful!!

Students began by drawing half of a creatures head on the fold to create a symmetrical picture. They added details such as eyes and cool designs. Students traced over the pencil lined with black crayon.

 To transfer their design to the other half of their paper, students folded the paper so the drawing was on the inside. The outside of the paper was rubbed with a hard object the transfer the crayon to the other half.

Students chose a pair of complementary color pastels to color their creatures.

 Students cut out the creatures. The nose was cut and taped up to create the opening for the mouth. A metallic piece of paper was added to the mouth opening.

5TH GRADE: COLOR WHEEL

 Students are beginning the year learning about color and how to mix colors.






Students created a color wheel on their paper before they began painting

 They looked at a color wheel to help them label their paper before they began painting.

 Students learned that taking care of their brushes by cleaning them out well helped to mix the colors that they wanted. All colors on the color wheel were made with just the Primary Colors: red, yellow and blue!!

  

Through this lesson, students learned a lot about color and how to create the secondary colors as well as the intermediate colors, which are colors such as yellow-green, red-violet and blue-green.

5TH GRADE WATERCOLOR

Students began by choosing a photo and sketching it on a piece of manila paper.









             In order to keep the watercolor paper as clean as possible  I had them transfer their sketch to the watercolor paper by blackening in the back of their manila paper.
         

They taped their manila paper with their blackened side
down on the watercolor paper & traced over their sketch, which allowed their sketch to be transferred to the watercolor paper.







Students painted over their sketch with black glue to help outline their subject. This is called a glue resist technique.

  

 

Before beginning the watercolor, students practiced some techniques they could use in their painting:  a wash, wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, and dry brush.

Students were encouraged to use the  techniques they learned to create different effects.

5TH GRADE GIACOMETTI SCULPTURE

Students began with 3 pipe cleaners- 1 for
the head and body, 
1 for the arms/hands, and 1 for the legs/feet. 
This was their base form to work with.

Next, students wrapped their form with foil. We studied various Giacometti photos before the lesson so the students knew to make long, slender bodies.

After the foil was on the students put their body into a pose. The body was then hot glued to a base. They noticed during the intro that  Giacometti's sculptures were on a base and that they seemed to be in motion or show movement

.








A varnish was painted on the sculpture to keep the foil from coming loose and to help their creations stand up!

Yep! Animals too!

 I love how these turned out! Students really got creative and many personalities came out in their sculptures!
